Bibles for Missions
What started as a mustard seed ideal some 20 years ago evolved into a
highly successful venture of good will.
All came about when communism tried to eliminate Christianity in
1990/91. But when communism collapsed the Christian world switched
gears from praying for lost souls to reaching out to them.
When Ben and Hennie De Regt, Abbotsford, BC residents, heard about the
dire need for Bibles they setup their first Bibles for Missions, (BFM)
Thrift Store in their hometown.
Ben phoned the Canadian Bible League and made a deal that all monies
were to go for Bible publishing and distribution overseas.
The De Regt's initial intent was to raise money for Bibles but soon
they learned of the many other needs connected to Missions overseas.
The two start scouting about and soon more BFM Thrift Stores sprung to
life. The couple's humble beginnings from so long ago mushroomed into
38 stores operating in Canada today, with 13 in the U.S called BFM
Thrift Centers, another 4 in New Zealand and 10 in Australia called
BFM Op-Shops. Another six are scheduled to open early this year.
This lowly Bible adventure spread far beyond providing Bibles only.
Store proceeds today publish and distribute millions of Bibles and
cover the cost of Bible interpretations in 450 languages. It also
provides materials for illiteracy and evangelistic programs needed to
start planting new churches on world wide basis.
The Bible Leagues vision for 2020 is to train 10 million nationals and
engage 100 millionpeople in the study of God's Word through education
and Bible studies. The 38 BFM's in Canada alone sent a near
$30,000,000 to the Bible League by by year ending 2008.
